Are Recording Artists the New Music Companies and Music Executives?

The Heretics comment: Today’s recording artist such as Bruno Mars, B.o.B or Janelle Monteille, Esparanza Spalding, Adele, Clare Maguire are great young musical talent. They seemed to have taken back the music scene with raw unfiltered talent. With striking lyrics and juxtapose musical scores they are reinventing today’s music. Another fascinating fact about these talented newbie’s is they are controlling their own destines. Many of them are not tied to the ball and chain of a record label or contract.

It seems as if Bruno Mars just came from nowhere, but quite the contrary. After signing with Motown in 2004 and receiving very little to no development and marketing, Mars struck on his own to work the “business”. As a songwriter, producer, performer, and singer Bruno Mars is one-stop deal.

This story references the new artist of today as entrepreneurs, or visionaries or Agents of Change who are changing the game. The writer says, “This is SO key: ARTISTS are TAKING OVER AND RUNNING THE BUSINESS OF MAKING MUSIC, which is different from the MUSIC BUSINESS.”

It’s time to join the movement with these up and coming artist – please see link below for more information on this topic.

Universal Music seeing ‘tens of millions’ from YouTube

Thanks to Greg Sandavol for sharing this story. It appears that record labels have a found a way to turn YouTube into cash flow. In an interview with CNET News this week, Rio Caraeff, executive vice president of Universal Music Group’s eLabs, said the largest of the top recording companies is bringing in “tens of millions of dollars” from YouTube. “(YouTube) is not like radio, where it’s just promotional,” said Caraeff, who heads up Universal’s digital group. “It’s a revenue stream, a commercial business. It’s growing tremendously. It’s up almost 80 percent for us year-over-year in the U.S. in terms of our revenue from this category.”

YouTube’s business model consists of a two-part licensing deal with labels. Under the deal, the recording companies post music videos on the site and share advertising revenue with YouTube. The advertising revenue attached to the music videos yields millions of dollars. Now that YouTube is a viable media source – ad dollars from radio and television have shifted to online efforts for many companies. This is revenue stream is how media has been profitable for years.

You must be thinking how this information could help you as an independent artist. Simply look at the model that YouTube and recording labels have. Why can’t you as independent artist do the same? Any product, brand or company worth their salt knows the value of fans/followers/consumers – that is why you see advertising for major brands pop up on YouTube. Create a channel on YouTube and grow your subscriber base, then you can approach advertisers for sponsorship opportunities.

The Beyonce Brand – Not afraid of Controversy

attorneycross On February - 28 - 20111 COMMENT

The Heretic’s Comment: World renowned Beyonce is the ultimate example of a diversified brand. Although her latest photo shoot may be controversial, there is no doubt that her brand is appealing to consumers in a variety of world markets.

Blog Critics reports: Beyonce’s I Am World tour did 108 shows in 78 cities. The shows were performed on 6 continents and 1.1 million fans attended. Let’s also not forget the 16 Grammy awards that she has racked up over the years.

She is singer, songwriter, performer, actress, model, spokesperson, producer, and creative business woman. Beyonce has developed a business model that has her well on her way to becoming one of the wealthiest performers of all times. Additionally, Beyonce has developed her brand to the point that she is not afraid to risk doing more edgier projects and marketing opportunities.

As an Artist, Musical Group, Band, Songwriter or Performer learn to explore the edges of your creativity and brand just like Beyonce has been willing to do. Now in making this suggestion, we are not telling you to compromise who you are and we you believe in just for the sake of drawing attention to yourself. Individuals who compromise their standards for success usually don’t have happy endings. But there is a edge to what you do and part of responsibility as an Artist is to  find the edge and push past it. Lead your Fanbase…Don’t Follow your Fanbase.

As we have stated to you repeatedly in The Heretic,  you greatly increase you possibility of sustained success when you set trends and don’t follow them!!!

Let us know your thoughts and comments!!!

Congratulations to Beyonce

6 Critical Insights Into Music Business Success

6 Critical Insights Into Music Business Success

The Heretic’s comment:  San Francisco State University’s Music and Recording Industry Program held a professional’s panel consisting of prominent Bay Area music industry figures discussing strategies that artists could utilize to garner an audience and eventually sell directly to them.

Perspectives on building an audience included:

  1. Building a team
  2. Be consistent
  3. Signing to a label
  4. Communicating with fans
  5. Merchandising
  6. The live experience

In the music game today – it is possible to be self-contained (independent); however, one essential step in assuring fluidity in getting your music heard, performing, etc is to assemble a team.  A team of people whose skills are diverse and strengths are superior to yours in other areas.  That team will help build on items 2-6 on the list above.  Be certain to include an Attorney on your team!

The Heretic’s Comment: We love featuring stories that demonstrate the unstoppable force connected with self-empowerment. While this is an older story we have been tracking over the last couple of weeks, we decided to move forward with posting it now, because the more we looked at the numbers, the more phenomenal  Juanes’ tremendous work ethic and grind began to impress us.

For those of you who are not familiar with Juan Esteban Aristizabal Vasquez p/k/a Juanes, he is a columbian solo rock artist who was once a member of the heavy metal band Ekhymosis. Since going solo, Juanes has achieved significant exposure of his music through the use of social media networks. For example, Juanes has an estimated 1.8 million followers on Twitter on any given day and his Facebook Fanpage has over 2.3 million members.

What makes Juanes accomplishment even more impressive is the fact that he only sings songs in Spanish.  So he has not compromised his base support in order to achieve cross-over success.  In place of cross-over dreams,  Juanes has opted to map out a strategy and focus toward grinding and grinding and grinding to expand his existing base of Spanish speaking fans.

Now the even more beautiful part of Juanes story is not the huge number of followers and fans he has respectfully in Twitter and Facebook, but instead is the fact that he has successfully translated these numbers into cashflow.  Juanes has accumulated a string of awards from his consistent record sales and hits.

Further, Juanes movement is starting to have global impact. In fact, recently he was featured on the cover of Billboard magazine and will also start a U.S. Tour in March 2011 (a couple of days away). Through his grind ethic, Juances has transformed himself into both an Icon and Super-Brand.

Closing Comments:

The thing we love most about Juanes’ story is the following observation: Juanes did not wait for someone else to promote his artistry and music. Nor did he allow himself to be held hostage by some power structure by waiting for someone to approve a budget before he could move forward. Instead, he took the power that he already had (name recognition and hustle) and kept expanding it…expanding it…expanding it….and then expanding it more. And he is not stopping. The North American Tour, the Billboard cover, these items are only going to expand his power base further.

This is the lesson we are always trying to get across to you here on The Heretic. Don’t wait for someone to give you permission to move forward with building and connecting a fanbase to your music. Further, don’t limit yourself or your music’s potential by thinking that you can’t achieve great success unless you have a major label machine behind you. Instead, understand that You make the difference. Everything hinges on you and what you believe about yourself and what you believe about your music.

If you create great music and are willing to believe that there can be a world without limits with regard to your music and the power connected to it, we truly believe that everything you need to go to the level you desire will be drawn to you.

Juanes has done it…..Now It’s Your Turn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give us your thoughts.

The Heretic’s Comment: One of our goals this year is to be more persistent in passing forward possible cash-flow opportunities and exposure for subscribers and readers of the Music Business Heretic to take advantage through either song placements, live performances, jingles and commercial uses. We have various sources of finding out about cash-flow opportunities many of which come through our various group connections in LinkedIn (Don’t forget about LinkedIn Groups…They are a very powerful resource).

At any rate, we will try our best to only post opportunities we feel are legitimate offers, but with that being said, we disclaim the making of any warranties, representations or guarantees regarding any postings appearing in our Blog. Of course, we always advise you to seek legal counsel when shopping music for placement and licensing in order to ensure that your rights are protected. You have the option of hiring our Firm (The Cross Firm, P.C.) but hiring The Cross Firm, P.C., is not a prerequisite for any postings that we will provide and you are of course free to use your own legal counsel as well as use no counsel at all if you so choose. The main lesson with the above is to make sure that you always perform due diligence before making submissions either through your own personal efforts or by hiring someone to perform such due diligence services on your behalf. Finally, we will make the above disclaimer with every posting dealing with song placements and/or licensing opportunities.

Okay enough of the red-tape. The Opportunity appears below.

DAR.fm Starts To Disrupt What’s Left Of The Music Industry

The Heretics comment: DAR.fm is a service that allows users to record music and talk shows from hundreds of radio stations that have online streams. The recordings are stored online, and users can then play back the recordings in any order, skip and rewind songs, and pause playback. The owner, Michael Robertson says that legally, he should be okay to offer the services based upon a precedent case but acknowledges that he doesn’t know how the record companies will feel about it.

The services will be offered through mobile apps for iPhone, Android, Palm WebOS, and Windows Phone, and available on home digital audio systems like the Logitech Squeezebox.

We will continue to follow DAR.fm to see how this all plays out in terms of the legalities, digital royalty payments, etc. Let this be food-for-thought for you as well.

Music Execs Stressed Over Free Streaming

attorneycross On February - 25 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Music Execs Stressed Over Free Streaming

The Heretic’s comment:  It is our goal to provide Heretic readers useful information that could be helpful in cash-flowing.  This is one of those pieces of information that if analyzed for the purpose of strategizing could deem valuable for an independent artist.

This article appeared in PC World Magazine.  I found it valuable because the music industry expected CD sales to decline never really prepared for the way consumers would consume music. Joab Jackson of IDG News says, “Free streaming services are replacing piracy as the chief culprit of music industry revenue loss in the minds of fiscally frustrated executives, if a number of panel discussions at a New York digital music conference are any indication.”

People are listening to more music than ever before, but they are paying less for it, noted Russ Crupnick, a president at the analyst firm NPD Group, speaking at the Digital Music Forum East conference, held Thursday in New York.

In a recent post – ‘How to Sell Our in Today’s Music Business’ we spoke about the ways that consumers access, purchase and experience music has revolutionized. This story is one of those examples of how consumers have changed their media preferences when it comes to listening to music. Free streaming Internet services, such as Rhapsody, MySpace, Spotify and YouTube are websites where consumers get music.  These are target sites to place your music. These sites help you build a fan base.

Myspace Music President Steps Down

attorneycross On February - 25 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Myspace Music President Steps Down

The Heretic’s comment:  In the midst of all the changes in the music industry, technology and consumer preference another giant in the information technology/music industry announced the stepping down of their President.  Myspace, a pioneer in social networking became the most popular social networking site in 2006.  After implementing new designs in 2007 and 2008 and branding a new image 2010, traffic to the website continues to decline.  The future of Myspace is unclear.

One thing is certain in the rules of business and that is – every business, product, widget, music, etc has a lifecycle.  During various stages in the lifecycle, businesses have to constantly evaluate and make adjustments to sustain longevity in the marketplace.  It is of utmost importance to take note of industry changes, economic changes, etc. and make beneficial adjustments before your company reaches the decline stage.

As a musician, band, solo artist, etc. you must do the same.  Be aware of what the business climate is in the industry.  Your goal is longevity.  Make necessary changes in your marketing plans as you go along.  If something is not yielding the results you hoped for – switch gears, find out what others are doing, find out what is working for others and incorporate those things into your marketing plan.  Do not wait until it is too late.  Your objective is to be “relevant” to your fans.
